How to upgrade weapons in Hell is Us
To upgrade weapons in Hell is Us, you first need to unlock this mechanic. Luckily, you'll do this quite early on in the game after investigating Vitalis' basement in Jova and meeting up with Victor at the forge opposite.
When talking to Victor, select 'Upgrade Weapons' followed by the weapon you wish to upgrade. To perform a weapon upgrade, you'll need a certain number of Lymbic Shards. When you first upgrade a weapon to Grade 2, you'll need 75 Neutral, Small Shards, but the quantity of Shards will increase and the exact type will change as you further improve a weapon.
Upgrading weapons will increase its level cap along with other bonuses. One of which is choosing a Lymbic Sphere for the weapon. There are five Lymbic Spheres - Ecstasy, Grief, Rage, Terror and Neutral. Each one is tied to a different set of Glyphs and, once applied, you can only add Neutral and Glyphs from this sphere to your weapon. A Rage weapon, for example, can only use Rage and Neutral Glyphs.
I recommend aiming to have at least one weapon tied to each of the non-Neutral Lymbic Spheres. This will increase the number of abilities via Glyphs you have at your disposal, which in turn makes it easier to adapt to different enemies.
Remember to have Victor study any tomes on Lymbic smithing you find. Doing so will unlock new blacksmith features, such as the ability to upgrade weapons to higher Grades, infuse shards and other features.
Levelling up weapons up in Hell is Us explained
Levelling up weapons is a simple process in Hell is Us - use them to defeat enemies! Every enemy you kill using a weapon will grant it some XP and you can find its current level, along with a progress bar to the next, in the top left-hand corner of the screen.
I recommend regularly rotating your weapons to ensure you're not wasting XP on one which has reached its level cap. A weapon's level cap can, of course, be increased by upgrading it, but you'll need a good selection of different weapons imbued with different Lymbic Spheres to defeat every enemy you face. Due to this, it's best to avoid focusing on one solo weapon throughout your time in Hell is Us.
